Today’s organizations and leaders are measured by their clear statements and their vision, but not by those alone. Nili Goldfein, CEO at NGG Global Learning Solutions, adds performance measurements and precision to the mix

“Great ideas need landing gear as well as wings” (C.D. Jackson)

In the post-modern era, people follow business leaders who make clear statements and have great visions. And no, “striking gold” or making an exit do not qualify as a vision. Visions are inspiring values that cause people to feel that they are worthy and that they are making a difference.

Vision and inspiration are important, but that is far from enough. Organizations are measured, now more than ever, by the precision of their performance. Tight, precise performance keeps the organization in check with regard to its expenses (which of course impact the price of the product or service that the organizations provides) and its schedules, which is critical for taking advantage of windows of opportunity that open in the market. Precision now counts more than ever before. It includes optimal organizational structures, infrastructure and supporting processes, and excellent management of the organization’s human capital, i.e. its “ talent”, and precision when “waltzing” with suitable suppliers.

A tip for business leaders

Always remember that there no one person, as talented as they may be, who can do it all alone. If you are the “number one”, your job is to manage the future, because the future is already here. Smart leaders recruit excellent team players who can complement them. In their teams, at any given moment there will be someone pushing the boundaries and someone else maintaining them; someone taking the organization to the next level and someone else ensuring that the structure, technology and order are preserved. As the saying goes, God is in the right balance and in the details.
